The Story Behind Hobby Collector Co.
I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult in 2022. I had just graduated with my masters degree and begun working as a speech-language pathologist (my first grown up job!). Without the structure and deadlines of school, I found that I had a really hard time managing all the things I needed to do. I spent a lot of time procrastinating, rushing to do things at the last minute, and avoiding tasks I didn’t enjoy. After some conversations with my doctor and a visit to a psychologist, I was officially diagnosed with ADHD!
The diagnosis really surprised me and most of the people closest to me. I was always the girl who “had it together” – high school valedictorian, maintained good grades through college, worked part time and never fell behind. I also had anxiety. What I didn’t know before doing more research about ADHD is that anxiety is a common comorbidity. When I existed in a structured environment (school), my anxiety about the deadlines and not letting people down took over and helped me to manage everything. After graduating and beginning a job where I had autonomy over my responsibilities, I didn’t have that motivating anxiety and my ADHD symptoms became more prominent. How fun is that!?
Since 2022, I’ve learned a lot about ADHD and how to manage it. I’ve also looked back at my childhood and can now easily identify signs that could have given me an earlier diagnosis. My favorite ADHD symptom? Hobby collecting. Let’s discuss.
Hobby Collecting
I love to learn new things, especially creative things. I’ve always been this way. I’ve tried allllll the crafts – painting, drawing, beading, pottery, sewing, embroidery, etc. etc. etc… Most don’t stick. The issue with this is that I go ALL IN from the start, purchasing everything I need to do said project for several years, but only doing enough to master it. At that point, I get bored because there isn’t anything new.
A few hobbies have stuck with me – crocheting, sugar cookie decorating, and making random home decor. I’ve realized that crafts like these have so many different techniques, options, and ways to make it new – so the ADHD part of my brain is satisfied.
If you’ve read all of this; thank you. If you can relate to this; I see you. I hope you stick around to see all the things I make. I would love to connect and hear your hobby collecting story.
Wishing you endless dopamine-producing activities, until next time!
